Ultra
Electric Ltd: Instructions: Television V470
(1747)
These "Preliminary Operating
Instructions" were for Ultra's first post-war television set.
It stated "A more comprehensive instruction booklet is in the course
of production and will made available shortly." Coupled with
the fact that this set was contained in the 1947 Radiolympia
brochure without a price leads me to believe that technical problems,
or post-war shortages delayed the presence of this set. This
document is referenced DX. 25727. For further information see the
page Ultra V470.

Installation Do not insert the mains plug into the power supply point until the following instructions have been carefully carried out. The dealer from whom you purchased this television receiver will install it in your home, at the same time connecting the necessary aerial to the sockets provided, and setting the mains voltage adjustment to the voltage of your house electricity supply. [Fig.1 shows a voltage adjustment panel which can select 200-220, 220-240 or 240-260 volts]. If it can be arranged, the direct light from a window should not fall on the screen and where possible strong sunlight should be excluded from the room. The engineer will adjust the manual controls so that you will only have to carry out fine adjustments after switching on the set. |
Operation of
Controls The controls in normal use are situated at the front of the receiver as shown in Fig.2. On/off Switch and Brightness Control This control enables the receiver to be switched on or off and varies the degree of brightness. To switch on turn the control to the right; if you continue turning this control in a clock-wise direction it will increase the brightness of the picture presented to suit your won taste and the lighting of the room. Do not have the brightness control higher than necessary as continued use at a very bright level will reduce the life of the viewing tube. To switch off, turn the control, fully to the left. Do not switch off the receiver by disconnecting it from the mains supply or by a wall switch as damage to the tube will result. Volume Control This control varies the sound volume level. To increase volume turn the control in a clock-wise direction. |

It may be necessary to occasionally adjust
the controls on the right hand side of the receiver. Focus Adjustment may be necessary to obtain a clear, crisp, picture, showing maximum detail. Contrast This control varies the contrast between the light and dark parts of the picture shown on the screen, adjustment may be necessary to suit individual taste, and the general level of lighting in the room. Horizontal Hold This control enables the picture received on the screen to be kept in horizontal synchronism with the picture transmitted; that is, if this control is incorrectly set, strips of the picture will slip sideways or resolve into a confused pattern of light and shade. Vertical Hold This control enables the picture received on the screen to be kept in vertical synchronism with the picture transmitted; that is, if this control is incorrectly set, strips of the picture will travel up or down the screen or a number of superimposed images may be seen. Pre-set Controls These are situated at the back of the receiver and their adjustment should only be carried out by the television engineer. Important Notes The following adjustments should be carried out when the picture received is other than normal
