Ultra Electronics Ltd: 1947 Instructions for Television V470

These "Preliminary Operating Instructions" were for Ultra's first post-war television set.  It stated "A more comprehensive instruction booklet is in the course of production and will made available shortly."  Coupled with the fact that this set was contained in the 1947 Radiolympia brochure without a price leads me to believe that technical problems, or post-war shortages delayed the presence of this set.  This document is referenced DX. 25727.  For further information see the page Ultra V470

The Ultra V470 Instructions

How to Operate Your Ultra Table Television Receiver

Do not insert the mains plug into the power supply point until the following instructions have been carefully carried out.

The dealer from whom you purchased this television receiver will install it in your home, at the same time connecting the necessary aerial to the sockets provided, and setting the mains voltage adjustment to the voltage of your house electricity supply. [Fig.1 shows a voltage adjustment panel which can select 200-220, 220-240 or 240-260 volts].

If it can be arranged, the direct light from a window should not fall on the screen and where possible strong sunlight should be excluded from the room.  The engineer will adjust the manual controls so that you will only have to carry out fine adjustments after switching on the set.

Operation of Controls
The controls in normal use are situated at the front of the receiver as shown in Fig.2.

On/off Switch and Brightness Control

This control enables the receiver to be switched on or off and varies the degree of brightness.  To switch on turn the control to the right; if you continue turning this control in a clock-wise direction it will increase the brightness of the picture presented to suit your won taste and the lighting of the room.  Do not have the brightness control higher than necessary as continued use at a very bright level will reduce the life of the viewing tube.  To switch off, turn the control, fully to the left.  Do not switch off the receiver by disconnecting it from the mains supply or by a wall switch as damage to the tube will result.

Volume Control

This control varies the sound volume level.  To increase volume turn the control in a clock-wise direction.

Fig. 2. Controls

It may be necessary to occasionally adjust the controls on the right hand side of the receiver.
Adjustment may be necessary to obtain a clear, crisp, picture, showing maximum detail.
This control varies the contrast between the light and dark parts of the picture shown on the screen, adjustment may be necessary to suit individual taste, and the general level of lighting in the room.
Horizontal Hold
This control enables the picture received on the screen to be kept in horizontal synchronism with the picture transmitted; that is, if this control is incorrectly set, strips of the picture will slip sideways or resolve into a confused pattern of light and shade.
Vertical Hold
This control enables the picture received on the screen to be kept in vertical synchronism with the picture transmitted; that is, if this control is incorrectly set, strips of the picture will travel up or down the screen or a number of superimposed images may be seen.
Pre-set Controls
These are situated at the back of the receiver and their adjustment should only be carried out by the television engineer.

Important Notes

As the viewing tube employs high voltages, do not at any time connect your receiver to the mains supply while the back is removed.
If at any time while transmission is taking place you switch on your receiver and only a bright spot or one vertical or horizontal line appears on the screen, switch off at once to prevent damage.  The television engineer should then be called to carry out an examination of your receiver.
It should be noted that after switching on, a warming-up period of about five minutes should be allowed for this receiver to come into full operation.

The following adjustments should be carried out when the picture received is other than normal

  1. If the picture loses its sharpness and becomes blurred, the Focus control should be carefully reset.
  2. If the picture moves up and down the screen or appears as a narrow horizontal strip the Vertical Hold should be adjusted until the picture becomes stable.
  3. Assuming that the Vertical Hold control has been correctly set, if the pattern appears as a confused mass of widely spaced horizontal lines with a number of faint images side by side, or the whole picture appears to slip sideways and is slightly bent, or if a portion of the picture slips sideways adjust the Horizontal Hold.
  4. If the contrast of the light and shade portions of the picture is insufficient, adjust the Contrast control, the Brightness control should then be adjusted to suit individual taste.  This control varies the general brightness of the picture as distinct from the Contrast control.
  5. Should both Contrast and Brightness controls become seriously maladjusted at the same time, proceed as follows:-

(a) Turn Contrast control in a right-hand direction for about three-quarters of its available movement.
(b) Adjust Brightness control to obtain a reasonable picture
(c) Then re-adjust Contrast to give the necessary degree of discrimination between black and white and
(d) Finally, adjust the Brightness to desired level

  1. Note particularly that adjustment of the Contrast control may affect the general steadiness of the picture, and should this occur, steadiness can be regained by adjusting the Horizontal Hold controls as necessary.
  2. Special Note.  Should the side controls be touched (by accident) and thrown out of correct adjustment, it will be found difficult to re-adjust these controls unless the Contrast control is first set to its approximately correct position, i.e., in a right hand direction for about three-quarters of its available movement.
